Labrador Retrievers hail from Newfoundland Island, off the northeast Atlantic coast of Canada. Originally called the dogs of St. John, behind the capital of Newfoundland, the Labs have served as friends and assistants to local fishermen since the 1700s.
The dogs would spend the rest of the day working with their owners, pulling out fish that had escaped from the hooks and pulling lines, and then returning home to spend the night with the fishing family.
Although their legacy is unknown, many believe that the dog of St. John’s was reunited with Newfoundland Dog and other local small water dogs.
History
Foreigners saw the usefulness of the dog and its good attitude, and English athletes brought in a few English labs to work as hunting. The second Earl of Malmesbury was one of the first and sent the dogs of St. John’s to England sometime around 1830. Malmesbury’s third Earl was the first person to call dogs Labradors.
Ironically, the Labs – now the most popular dog in America – were almost extinct in the 1880s, and the Malmesbury family and other English fans are said to have saved the breed. In Newfoundland, the species disappeared as a result of government restrictions and tax laws. Families were allowed to keep more than one dog, and to have a female was subject to a heavy tax, so the puppies’ dogs were discarded.
In England, however, the breed survived, and the Kennel Club recognized the Labrador Retriever as a separate breed in 1903. The American Kennel Club followed suit in 1917, and in the ’20s and’ 30s, British Labs were imported to establish the brand. in the US
The fame of this breed began to emerge after World War II, and in 1991, the Labrador Retriever became a popular dog registered with the American Kennel Club – and they have been holding that distinction ever since. They are also at the top of the list in Canada and England.
Today, Labs specialize in drug and explosives detection, search and rescue, treatment, and assistance to the disabled, and hunter-gatherers. They also excel in all kinds of dog competitions: show, field, speed, and listening.

Children and Other Pets

The Labrador Retriever not only loves kids but enjoys the hustle and bustle that comes with them. They will happily attend a child’s birthday party and wear a party hat voluntarily. Like all dogs, however, they need training on how to behave close to children – and children need to be taught how to behave close to a dog.
As with all species, you should always teach children how to approach and touch dogs, and always direct any interaction between dogs and young children to avoid any biting or ear or tail pulling in any group. Teach your child to never get close to any dog while eating or sleeping or trying to rob a dog of food. No dog, no matter how friendly, should be left unattended with a child.
If the Lab has a lot of exposure to other dogs, cats, and small animals, and is trained in how to deal with them, it will be friendly with other pets, too.
